NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang Visits China

On January 19, Jensen Huang, the Founder and CEO of NVIDIA, made an appearance in Beijing to participate in NVIDIA’s Chinese New Year appreciation event.

As per the previously disclosed itinerary, Jensen Huang’s main purpose during this visit was to attend NVIDIA China’s annual meeting, having already visited several major cities in China, including Shenzhen, Taipei, and Beijing. NVIDIA staff on-site mentioned that the NVIDIA Beijing branch’s annual meeting is scheduled for January 20, after which Jensen Huang will be flying to Shanghai.

During his opening speech at the Chinese New Year appreciation event, Jensen Huang extended New Year greetings to all attendees. Reflecting on the 60-year history of the computer industry, he emphasized that the present marks not only the beginning of a new year but also the onset of a new era led by AI in computing. Jensen Huang highlighted NVIDIA’s significant role in “reinventing the computer,” particularly through the development of a new type of computer based on NVIDIA GPUs, which is pivotal for the advancement of AI.

When discussing the purpose of his visit to China, Jensen Huang mentioned that he came to participate in the NVIDIA China annual meeting with employees to collectively “celebrate the Spring Festival.” He shared that NVIDIA has been operating in China for over 25 years, with nearly 4000 employees in the country. Over the past few years, the workforce has grown by almost 56%, with branches and offices established in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong. Jensen Huang highlighted the remarkably low employee turnover rate at NVIDIA, standing at just 0.9% annually.

During the event, Jensen Huang emphasized NVIDIA’s extensive developer ecosystem in China, which includes 1.5 million CUDA software ecosystem developers and partnerships with nearly 3000 startup companies in the country. Serving as the sole award presenter at the appreciation event, Jensen Huang presented awards to developers, NVIDIA campus ambassadors, and various other projects.

At the dinner segment of the appreciation event, Jensen Huang underscored NVIDIA’s investments and achievements in China. Using the example of NVIDIA’s long-standing consumer-grade graphics card product, GeForce, he expressed that “to some extent, China has been instrumental in NVIDIA’s growth, with NVIDIA evolving alongside the Chinese technology industry.”

During his visit to Taiwan before arriving in China, Jensen Huang met with industry figures such as Wei Zhejia, Chairman of TSMC, and Lin Xianming, Chairman of Wistron, an AI server contract manufacturer, providing further insights into NVIDIA’s market activities.

Regarding the production and market release progress of the new generation Blackwell chip being produced in collaboration with Taiwan, Jensen Huang commended TSMC’s production efficiency and mentioned that they are “expanding production at the fastest pace.” While attending the Wistron annual meeting, Jensen revealed that NVIDIA’s AI server orders to Wistron are “significant” and extend beyond that.

Jensen Huang’s visit to China for the employee annual meeting is a longstanding internal tradition of the company. Before the Spring Festival last year, he also visited NVIDIA’s offices in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen to attend the annual meetings of the Chinese regional branches.

In response to the new regulations on the spread and control of AIGPU chips introduced by outgoing U.S. President Biden, NVIDIA officially expressed objections. The company criticized the document for being hastily drafted during the last government transition period without adequate industry consultation, being “secretly drafted,” and lacking proper legislative review. NVIDIA argued that the AI GPU-related chips and technologies targeted by the regulations are already widely used in mainstream gaming PCs and consumer hardware, and imposing controls would not enhance U.S. security but rather weaken the country’s competitiveness in technological innovation.

Regarding his absence at the inauguration ceremony of U.S. President Biden, Jensen Huang mentioned in a media interview that he would congratulate Trump on his inauguration, but the company has not yet engaged in discussions with new government officials regarding the Biden administration’s measures on AI chip exports.
