Canada is soon set to receive a brand-new tribal casino next to a beloved bingo hall in Ontario. The project is the brainchild of the Wauzhushk Onigum Nation, which will be joining forces with local gaming powerhouse Gateway Casinos & Entertainment.
Wauzhushk Onigum Nation to Open New Casino, Renovate Bingo Hall
According to the announcement, Wauzhushk Onigum Nation and Gateway Casinos & Entertainment will work on opening a new casino next to the tribe’s existing Golden Eagle Bingo Hall. That’s not all, however, as the bingo hall itself is set to receive an extensive makeover.
According to officials, the casino and bingo hall refurbishment has been on the table for a while. The Wauzhushk Onigum has reportedly been negotiating this initiative for several years now, aiming to modernize and expand its offering.
The Gap radio station, which broke the news on the matter, said that the bingo hall, which was originally an ice hockey arena, will require extensive renovations. Following that, it will be split into two spaces with a common entrance.
One side of the refurbished building will remain a bingo hall with a capacity to fit 400 guests and additional spaces for community events. The other will house the new casino. However, as of the time of this writing, the casino’s full offering and game capacity remain unknown.
In any case, officials expect the new bingo hall to reopen in the second half of 2026.
Healthcare Organization Expresses Concern about Ontario Betting
In other Ontario-related news, Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare in Windsor expressed concerns about the rapid expansion of the online sports betting industry. The organization’s chief executive, Bill Marra, noted that the wagering industry’s growth has caused harm to many people in the Canadian province, pushing some into debt.
While Marra agreed that banning online sports betting would be impossible and impractical, he encouraged further safeguards to protect local players from harm.
