Some money will go towards Canada’s quantum computing ecosystem over the next five years
Tuesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney held his first budget meeting, which proposed providing more than $1 billion over the next five years to build up the country’s artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing ecosystems while embedding AI technology into more of the federal government operations.
During the 2025 budget, the federal government proposed providing $925.6 million over the next five years to support a large-scale “sovereign” public AI infracture, reports CBC News. $800 million of the investment will come from funds that were set aside by the 2024 budget, which announced a total of $2 billion to boost Canada’s AI compute capacity and to help build a public supercomputer infrastructure. The budget is reallocating the money towards boosting AI compute availability and support access to sovereign AI compute capacity for public and private research” and ensure Canada can be “globally competitive in a secure and sovereign environment.”
Quantum computing ecosystem-wise, the federal goveernment is proposing to provide $334.3 million over the next five years to a variety of government departments and agencies to push quantum technology companies in Canada. The money will also be use to adopt these technologies ot defence-related applications and industries. This money will come from the Defense Industrial Strategy, though Carney’s goverment hasn’t delivered this strategy yet. In fact, it’s not expected to see this strategy until later this year, at the earliest, according to CBC News.
The budget also describes smaller AI initiatives announced, including that AI Minister Evan Solomon working with the industry to identify AI infrastructure projects for the future. Furthermore, the budget explains ways the federal government intends to embed AI technology to its operations to help improve productivity and services.
