Donkey Kong Bananza Will Rule!
Now that the dust has settled, many have had time to reflect on Mario Kart World, the flagship title that launched alongside the Nintendo Switch 2. While it’s undeniably an incredible racer, a few missing elements kept it from reaching its full potential. As a result, fans are eagerly anticipating the next big console exclusive, hoping it will deliver where Mario Kart World fell short. Well, here are five reasons why Donkey Kong Bananza won’t just meet those expectations, it’s going to smash them.
1. A New Beginning
Donkey Kong is best known for its excellent side-scrolling adventures. Although Nintendo briefly explored a 3D approach with the Nintendo 64, the series returned to its roots with the impeccable Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze. So, why change now? With Bananza, Donkey Kong is getting a new lease of life. Picking up where Super Mario Odyssey left off, this new adventure promises the freedom to explore, discover, and experiment with a whole host of fresh mechanics.
2. Fully Destructive Environment
Central to the experience is the ability to destroy everything in your path. Roll, jump, and punch your way through the world to uncover the many secrets hidden within. You can literally grab and tear apart the environment, then use it as a weapon against the foes that roam the region. The destruction looks truly dynamic, helping to make each player’s adventure feel unique. This even extends into a separate mode called DK Artist, where you can sculpt and build whatever you like using a suite of powerful tools. It’s a feature that highlights the impressive level of detail poured into the game’s destructive mechanics.
3. Bananza Powers
You can use Bananza Powers to morph into different characters, each offering unique abilities to aid in exploration. Kong Bananza can smash through the environment with ease, while Zebra Bananza speeds across the terrain and can even run on water. Ostrich Bananza takes to the skies, lobbing eggs from great heights. You can switch between forms on the fly, provided you have enough energy, opening up countless opportunities to experiment with powers and explore the world in creative ways.
4. So Much to Do
It’s clear that the game is packed with content. From a wide range of collectibles used to purchase items and customize DK’s appearance, to others that let you level up his abilities, there are plenty of reasons to get lost in this world. One of the most intriguing elements, however, is the hidden challenges scattered throughout the environment. Some will require you to alter the landscape to solve puzzles, complete time-based trials, or even tackle returning side-scrolling levels. It seems Nintendo is going all in on Donkey Kong, and this could very well be the pinnacle of his video game adventures.
5. Switch 2’s Visual Showcase
Built from the ground up for the Switch 2, Bananza is a lush platformer featuring highly detailed environments. A standout feature is DK’s movement; he’s fluid, expressive, and looks like a joy to control. Combined with the game’s dynamic environmental destruction, this could set a new visual benchmark for Nintendo.
Although Mario Kart World is an absolute blast, these reasons suggest that Donkey Kong Bananza could be the best Switch 2 exclusive of 2025. With its focus on destruction, exploration, and discovery, this really could be the year of Kong.
