New “Daredevil” Going Darker Than Netflix?

New “Daredevil” Going Darker Than Netflix?

Marvel
Marvel Studios is set to release “Daredevil: Born Again” next month, a series that underwent a serious creative overhaul that led to several already shot episodes being retooled partway through production.

Whereas a midway reset could be a bad sign for productions, in this case, it has been seen as only a good thing, as the show’s tone and story are now expected to match those of the original Netflix series.

That means a decidedly darker show than the Marvel Studios series to have aired on Disney+ thus far. In fact, showrunner Dario Scardapane tells Empire Online that his big goal with the new run is to go past the boundaries even prior seasons of the show set:

“The level of violence is way up there for a Marvel/Disney show, I don’t think there’s anything else even in the ballpark. There’s a moment in this that is just absolutely bats—, and way past anything Netflix ever did.”

Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in the series, very much agrees with that assessment, saying: “We’ve gone further in the darkness, the action, the nastiness” and compared it to what the original show would’ve been like several seasons further beyond what they produced.

Scardapane adds that the new series also evolves the core Daredevil/Kingpin relationship, going beyond the usual routine of building up to a fight in the finale. Instead, it puts that big match-up within the premiere:

“If you look at how it ends almost every season, they punch the s— out of each other, Kingpin goes to jail, we know he’s gonna come back. I didn’t want to do that. This dynamic is way more tense. There’s one scene between them in the first episode that lays it all out. Then we spend the next eight episodes throwing rocks at it.”

Fisk is now mayor of New York City, meaning taking down Fisk is going to be tougher than ever for the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. We’ll see the results for ourselves when the new season commences on Disney+ from March 4th.
