As the historic coronation of Iku Baba Yeye, Oba Engr. Akeem Abimbola Owoade I, approaches, the Diaspora Initiative for the Alaafin Coronation has urged security agencies and relevant stakeholders to prioritize the safety of lives and property in the Oyo Federal Constituency.
In light of the recent increase in kidnappings and other security issues, the Initiative strongly advises the Oyo State Government, Police departments, Amotekun Corps, the National Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), and the respected Aare Ona Kakanfo, Iba Gani Adams, to enhance security measures throughout the state. This is especially important in and around the coronation venue.
A special appeal is also made to the Coronation Security Subcommittee Chairman, AIG Deji Ogundele (Rtd.), and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security to coordinate efforts to guarantee a peaceful and well-secured environment throughout the festivities.
The much-anticipated coronation, set to take place between March 31st and April 12th, 2025, is a momentous occasion, drawing high-profile dignitaries from across Nigeria and around the world to the Metropolitan City of Oyo. This event marks a historic milestone, as it has been 54 years since the last Alaafin coronation in 1971.
In a statement signed by Dr. Ademola Adeleke and Prince Lashley Ladigbolu, the Coordinators and spokespersons for the Diaspora Initiative for the Alaafin Coronation, the organization highlights the importance of this cultural and traditional ceremony. They urge all security agencies to take the necessary precautions to ensure the event is incident-free.
“The Alaafin’s coronation is not just a celebration of our heritage but a beacon of unity, tradition, and pride for the Yoruba people and beyond. We must do everything within our power to ensure that our guests experience the warmth, hospitality, and security that Oyo is known for,” the statement reads.
As Oyo prepares to host the world, all hands must be on deck to safeguard this historic moment, ensuring a smooth, peaceful, and grand coronation befitting the revered throne of Alaafin.
