Best Sustainable Swimwear Brand: Free People

What we love: Sustainable materials; trendy stylesWhat could improve: Limited sizing; priceyPrice range: $$–$$$$ | Return policy: Items can be returned within 30 days of delivery date (any returns after will be exchanged for a Free People gift card) | Sizes: Sizes range by brand, but Free-est suits typically run from XS–XL

We’re partial to Free People’s boho vibes (crochet bikinis, what?), but you can also rely on the brand’s curation and in-house line, Free-est, to bring you key fashion trends, such as tropical bikinis and plunging one-pieces. Notably, Free People has doubled the number of sustainable styles in its collection since 2021. Recycled materials are found throughout its pieces, and the company donates unsold wholesale and direct-to-consumer items to nonprofits in order to divert waste from landfills. Our eyes are currently set on this bikini-meets-tankini number with a gingham print and this classic one-piece that has ruching for tummy control and comes in a ton of colors.

Most Popular: Summersalt

Why we love it: Inclusive sizing; modest, full-coverage styles; under $100What could improve: Silhouettes may not feel sexy enough for somePrice range: $$–$$$ | Return policy: For a full refund, items must be returned unworn within 21 days of delivery date; mail-in returns will be charged an $8 label fee | Sizes: XS–3X

Summersalt is size-inclusive and one of the best swimwear brands for women who are looking for more coverage but want to avoid granny vibes (with all due respect to grannies). The company is best known for its chic yet practical styles, including the classic Sidestroke, which has a sweeping off-the-shoulder design and full coverage along the bum. Each style offers tummy-control compression and runs from sizes 0 through 24 (notable for swimwear). Tankinis, sporty swim skirts, long-torso styles, high-waist bikini bottoms, and an array of beach cover-ups are all worthwhile here too. Most pieces are available for under $100, don’t compromise on quality, and are modest enough for moms and anyone over 50.

Our favorite style: Glamour tester Katherine Howell-Kiser says she appreciates the Perfect Wrap suit’s no-fuss sewn-in cups that don’t shift or slip out in the wash. “I can also adjust the wrap and make it tighter for a more snatched look,” she says.

Abercrombie’s swimwear collection has something to love for everyone—and is one of the best swimsuit brands if you’re hunting for a trendy, affordable bikini. The company lets you mix and match with its wide variety of tops and bottoms. Its designs veer cheekier and skimpier (string bikinis for the win), with a range of styles that come in bright solid colors and fresh-feeling prints like cherries and Grecian tiles. Abercrombie’s also an excellent swimwear brand for big boobs, too, with its Curve Love line that carries tops designed with strong underwire bust support.

Cupshe is one of the brands Glamour readers shop the most. The best-selling swimsuit brand on Amazon is known for its retro-inspired, super-affordable one-pieces, bikini sets, swim dresses, tankinis, and cover-ups, including options with underwire for extra bust support and lots of ruching for tummy control. We like the wide array of sizes that Cupshe offers, ranging from extra-small picks to 3X plus-size pieces (and maternity swimsuits, too).

Best Designer Swimwear Brand: Agua by Agua Bendita

Why we love it: Gorgeous patterns; made of recycled materials; handmadeWhat could improve: Pricey; limited sizingPrice range: $$$–$$$$ | Return policy: All items must be returned in the original packaging, unused, unstained, unwashed, and with all tags within 30 days for a full refund; no exchanges. | Sizes: XS–XL

There’s nothing minimalist about Agua by Agua Bendita. Its designs don’t shy away from bright colors or unique prints—in fact, that’s the reason so many celebs (like Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner) and influencers have gravitated to the brand for both beachwear and wedding guest attire. Adding to its appeal? Each piece is handmade by artisans in Colombia, and the luxury brand produces only three collections per year in order to reduce its environmental impact.

Miraclesuit’s tummy-control swimsuits are like having a little magic in your drawer—perfect for those who want a boost of confidence at the beach along with comfort and support. The suits flatter and firm up all the right places without sacrificing comfort or style. Two particular pieces we have our eyes on include this illusionist crossover one-piece that hugs in all the right places.

Best Swimsuit Selection: Amazon

What we love: Giant selection of affordable and luxury swimwear; fast shipping; wide range of sizesWhat to consider: Content isn’t curated, so there’s a lot to shopPrice range: $–$$$$ | Return policy: Varies by brand, but most are returnable | Sizes: Varies by brand, but most offer XXS–XXXL

One retailer that’ll make your swimsuit shopping a little less painful is Amazon—it has a massive selection of in-house, luxury, and budget-friendly swimwear options, and its fast shipping can have your new pieces at your doorstep in as little as two days. Glamour editor-favorites include Cupshe, Miraclesuit, and Wrewring. When shopping for a suit on Amazon (or clothing in general), we recommend verifying the seller is reliable by clicking on their storefront and reading reviews to confirm that the product is the same color and fit as it appears.

Our favorite style: “My favorite suit of the season comes from Amazon. I was shocked by the quality of this under-$35, ultra-trendy white bow suit that is totally opaque in the water, washes well, and doubles as a top,” says Glamour commerce director Brie Schwartz.

Best for One-Pieces: BodenWhy we love it: One-pieces come with supportive cup sizing; practical, modest silhouettes; sustainable initiativesWhat could improve: Pricey; limited sizingPrice range: $$$ | Return policy: Boden offers free returns for items sent back in their original condition within 45 days of their ship date; if an item is returned after the 45-day period, it’s still eligible for store credit | Sizes: 32A–38DD

This Kate Middleton–favorite brand has an extensive selection of perfect-fit options, many of which are good for active women (like moms) looking for a little extra coverage without sacrificing cuteness. Many of the brand’s one-pieces come with custom cup sizes, which is ideal for the gals with larger busts. Boden is also stocked with styles for both long and short torsos, and plenty of plus-size options.

Our favorite style: “This is my all-time favorite bathing suit, and my only regret is that I only discovered it at 40,” says Schwartz of her Boden Rhodes Underwire Suit. “It took decades to find a one-piece that could give me the same support, lift, and shape as a swim top or a bra, so once I found Boden, which offers one-pieces with specific cup sizes (very rare!) I never looked back.”

Best Full-Coverage Swimwear Brand: Andie

Why we love it: Inclusive sizing, including long-torsoWhat could improve: PriceyPrice range: $$–$$$ | Return policy: Returns are accepted for items in original, unworn condition with all tags and liners intact within 14 days from delivery, and free exchanges are offered for all orders shipped to the US | Size range: XS–3X

Andie Swim created a Style Quiz quiz (gathering data from wear tests on thousands of women) to ensure your suit is right in line with your personal preferences, so you won’t be met with any unwelcome surprises when your package arrives. Shoppers approve of Andie Swim for offering long-torso swimsuits, more modest swimwear options, and support for when you’re bouncing around on the beach.

Our favorite styles: Glamour contributor Gina Marinelli is a fan of Andie’s Tulum swimsuit. “I spent a few extra minutes sitting around in this swimsuit just because the ribbed material is so comfortable,” she says. Another great pick? The Malibu suit. “It comes in a long-torso version, the snaps are adjustable so you can choose to show more or less cleavage, and it looks like a tank top when you wear it with a skirt, pants, or shorts,” says Glamour’s Howell-Kiser.

Best Trendy Swimwear Brand: Beach Riot

Why we love it: Fun, playful designs; some styles double as activewearWhat could improve: Limited plus sizingPrice range: $$–$$$ | Return policy: Accepts returns and exchanges of items within 14 days; shoppers are provided with a $7 return shipping label | Sizes: XS–XL

Designed in Orange County, California, Beach Riot’s swimsuits nod to Barbie and the boardwalk with bold colorblock one-pieces and neon knit bikinis. The multitasking suits are made for stretching out on the sand and catching waves, too. Most of the styles are made of quick-drying fabrics and have built-in bra support for higher-impact activities.

Anthropologie’s dreamy, festival-ready style extends to its in-house swimwear. Its one-pieces and bikinis feature maximalist bows, ruffles, and retro prints (while its cover-ups are heavy on linen, tiers, and mesh crochet and knits). The retailer carries a ton of good swimsuit brands (many of which are in this story), such as Agua Bendita, Andie, Beach Riot, and Montce. We’re big fans of their printed pieces, including this bikini embroidered with summery fruits.

Most Comfortable: Hunza GWhy we love it: Comfy crinkle fabric; tummy control; modestWhat could improve: Only come in one size; priceyPrice range: $$$–$$$$ | Return policy: All items bought directly from the Hunza G website can be returned within 45 days of purchase free of charge | Sizes: One-size model (typically fits a US size 0–12)

Hunza G’s staple crinkle fabric has been around since the 1980s. (Remember the white-and-blue dress Julia Roberts wore in Pretty Woman? It’s Hunza G.) A few decades and a rebrand later, its iconic crinkle suits still feel incredibly modern—and so comfortable. Vivid (and sorbet) shades, unique textures, and one-size-fits-most designs are what make this brand a must in our beach packing list.

Our favorite style: “The Hunza G square-neck one-piece is absolutely the most comfortable one I’ve ever worn,” says Navarro, with a nod to its extremely stretchy, clingy, one-size-fits-all design. “It’s more on the modest side, so if you’re not in the mood to wear swimwear that’s super revealing, it’s a great pick.

Best Swimwear Brand for Basics: J.CrewWhy we love it: Inclusive sizing; timeless styles; modest cuts availableWhat could improve: Styles are not at all trendy if you want a fresher feelPrice range: $$ | Return policy: For US orders, J.Crew accepts returns and exchanges within 30 days; a fee of $7.50 will be deducted from your refund for shipping | Sizes: 0–24

Prefer to keep things understated but stylish? J.Crew’s bathing suit collection offers that perfect balance of full coverage and timeless elegance. Its high-quality swimwear is all about comfort-meets-classic, cuts that make you feel covered yet chic—ideal for enjoying the sun in style. We’re particularly enamored with their 1940s-esque styles like this strapless, polka-dot one-piece and off-white balconette bikini that are the ultimate blend of fashionable and perennial.

Our favorite style: “I’ve worn a J.Crew ruched V-neck in classic black for over five years and get compliments on it all the time,” says Glamour commerce editor Malia Griggs. “Its plunging cut draws attention to my small bust, which I like, and its ruching is loose and comfy against my midsection. I especially appreciate that its fabric has UPF 50 sun protection woven in! I actually wear the suit year-round as a bodysuit under skirts and pants.”

Best Plus-Size Swimwear Brand: Good AmericanWhy we love it: Very inclusive sizing; fabric that expands and contracts with body changesWhat could improve: Runs out of sizes quicklyPrice range: $$–$$$ | Return policy: Accepts returns and exchanges of items within 21 days of the date an order was shipped | Sizes: XXS–4X

Good American has sizing down when it comes to denim, and we’re happy to report that they have nailed it in the plus-size swimsuit department too. To ensure that everyone gets to feel confident and sexy at the beach, GA’s swimwear is designed to fluctuate with the natural changes in your body—like swelled breasts and bloating. Good American also has maternity swimwear styles for pregnant people (and postpartum).

Best Swimwear Brand for Sexy Suits: Riot SwimWhy we love it: Trendy, daring stylesWhat could improve: PriceyPrice range: $$$ | Return policy: Shoppers seeking a full refund of the item cost and applicable taxes have seven days after the delivery date to do so. Refunds exclude shipping costs and insurance. | Sizes: XS–XL

Riot Swim one-pieces are some of reviewers’ favorite swimwear. The Echo one-piece is the brand’s best-selling item, all thanks to its ruched center with tummy control and its plunging neckline—everybody looks amazing in it. Not into one-piece swimsuits? Riot also has plenty of bikinis with cheeky bottoms and triangle tops that you can mix and match instead.

Our favorite style: “The ruching in the middle of Riot’s Echo one-piece provides some moderate tummy control and snatches your waist right in,” says Glamour contributor Andrea Navarro. “I also find the high-cut bottoms super flattering.”

Best Swimwear Brand for Bikinis: Frankies BikinisWhy we love it: Trendy; fun printsWhat could improve: Not full coverage; priceyPrice range: $$$ | Return policy: Unworn bikinis and clothing returned within 30 days of purchase are acceptable for a full refund | Sizes: XS–XXL

Between cutout bras and thong bikinis, Frankies Bikinis continues to bring a bold, unapologetic energy to its swimwear that will make you feel like that girl. (The bikini brand is cosigned by Gigi Hadid, Sydney Sweeney, and a number of fashion bloggers, after all.) We’d recommend this brand for those with smaller chests and for those who prefer an itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny yellow polka-dot bikini style, if you catch our drift.

All your swimsuit questions, answered

How to shop for a swimsuit

Start by checking the swimsuit’s fabric. Opt for supportive, durable materials such as polyester, spandex, or nylon, which can withstand multiple wears and washes without breaking down or stretching out. These synthetics can hold up to chlorine and are more likely to keep their color and shape than natural picks like cotton. Some swimsuits also double as UPF clothing, which (along with your handy body sunscreen) can help protect your skin from the sun’s rays.

How to wash a bathing suit

Always check the label for any specific washing and drying instructions. If you’re handwashing, rinse your suit in cold water immediately after use to remove chlorine, salt, and oils. Then fill a sink with cool water, add a small amount of mild detergent, and let the bathing suit soak for up to 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cool water to remove all soap residue. Gently squeeze out excess water (no wringing or twisting), and lay the bathing suit flat on a clean towel. Roll the towel up with the bathing suit inside to gently press out more water, then lay it flat to air-dry, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

How to find your swimsuit size

Start by measuring the fullest part of your bust, the narrowest part of your waist, and the widest part of your hips. Once you have those measurements, consult the size chart provided by the bathing suit brand. Remember, it’s not just about the numbers; consider the style and cut of each suit as well. Some designs run smaller or larger, so it’s important to think about how you want the bathing suit to fit—snug for support, or a bit looser for comfort? Many bathing suits also come with adjustable features such as straps or ties, allowing for a more personalized fit.

What’s the best bathing suit for you?

The right bathing suit depends on your personal style and the activities you have planned. For swimming or boating, look for styles with good support and secure fastenings (nobody wants to lose their top while they’re tubing). For simply lounging by the pool or at the beach, a more relaxed fit with less coverage can work.

One-piece: Provides moderate coverage and support, usually in a simple pull-on style. One-pieces are also available in bra sizes from some retailers.Bikini: Composed of a separate top and bottoms, bikinis come in an array of different styles including triangle top, halter, bandeau, side-tie bottoms, full briefs, Brazilian tangas, and more.Tankini: As a tank top combined with separate bottoms, a tankini offers more coverage than a classic bikini top.High-waist bottom: These are vintage-inspired bottoms that offer extra tummy control and support.Swim dresses: A one-piece with an attached skirt, providing additional coverage around the hips and thighs.Rash guard: A long- or- short-sleeve UV-protective athletic shirt, ideal for water sports and protection from the sun.
