Unknown gunmen suspected to be bandits Wednesday morning attacked Kiri High School in Aiyetoro Kiri, Kabba Bunu local government area of Kogi state.
However, members of the community’s vigilante group and hunters were said to have mobilised on time to checkmate the bandits.
A source who pleaded anonymity said the vigilante group and hunters successfully rescued all students kidnapped during the assault.
He said no student is presently in captivity following the prompt and coordinated response by the local security team.
The source added that a member of the vigilante group was killed and another man died in the rescue process.
The chairman of the local government area, Zaccheus Dare Micheal, in a statement by his chief press secretary, Omofa John, said the bandit’s attempt on the school was foiled.
”The attention of the Kabba/Bunu local government area authority has been drawn to a report circulating in the social media platforms regarding the attack at Kiri axis of Bunu district. For clarity and public understanding, we wish to formally state that the bandits attacked, and they were resisted and repelled by our team of security men. There are casualties as one hunter and a man died as a result of stray bullets.
”That as we speak, the Joint Task Force has intensified operations with the aim to restore confidence in the area.
”However, the government warns members of the public and members of the social media to stop spreading unverified news.
”The joint teams of security tactical units and local vigilantes are currently combing the surrounding bushes,” he said.
