Beginning of his journey
His journey started in the 1970s, far away from the glamour of Mumbai. He worked as a vocalist for Radio Nepal and sang at local restaurants in Kathmandu.

His first major opportunity came in 1980 when music director Rajesh Roshan offered him a playback role in the film Unees-Bees. He recorded his song alongside the legendary Mohammed Rafi.

Who is this superstar?
It is none other than Udit Narayan, he made his acting debut in the mid-80s in the Nepali film Kusume Rumal in 1985. This film turned into a classic and gave him his first taste of stardom in Nepal. He acted with famous personalities like Bhuwan KC and Tripti Nadkar in the film, and also sang four out of its six songs himself. The film went on to become a massive success, running in theaters for as long as 25 weeks.

Highest-grossing Nepali film for 16 years
For years, Kusume Rumal held the record as the highest-grossing Nepali film until it was surpassed 16 years later, in 2001, by Tulsi Ghimire’s Darpan Chhaya. This success earned Udit Narayan the status of Nepal’s superstar.

Udit Narayan’s breakthrough moment
Udit Narayan became widely recognized in Nepal, and his successful period in Bollywood also began afterward. A few of his tracks, such as Papa Kehte Hain and Akele Hain To Kya Gham Hai from Aamir Khan’s movie Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, turned into a nationwide hit in India. These songs not only topped the charts but also solidified his position in the Hindi film industry. Following the overwhelming admiration for these songs, his success skyrocketed, and he became one of Bollywood’s most legendary playback singers.
