Murphy Considering Extending “Monsters”

Netflix
Producer Ryan Murphy is reportedly rethinking his plans for the Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” due to new developments in the case.

Variety reports that a court hearing has been scheduled for the Menendez brothers as L.A. District Attorney George Gascón reviews new evidence suggesting their father allegedly molested them.

This has reportedly sparked Murphy’s interest in potentially extending the series with a few new episodes, telling the outlet:

“I think what I would be interested in doing if Nicholas [Alexander Chavez] and Cooper [Koch] would agree to do it is maybe one or two episodes that continue the story.”

Chavez and Koch portray Lyle & Erik Menendez respectively in the series that deals with the brothers’ real-life conviction and sentencing to life in prison without parole over the first-degree murder of their parents Jose and Kitty Menendez. the series has received decidedly mixed reviews, though there has been praise for the fifth episode which is a single, unbroken, 35 minute shot slowly zooming in on Cooper Koch’s Erik Menendez undergoing a psychological evaluation in prison.

The new hearing could potentially lead to a retrial or resentencing for Erik and Lyle, but the D.A. says that no decision has been made. The news comes as Erik released a statement through his wife slamming Murphy for the series. Murphy tells the trade:

“The thing that’s kind of painful is that the family was so outrageously against the show and spoke out so vociferously against it. But then the thing that they thought would hurt them is actually helping them. That doesn’t feel so great.”

The “Monster” series, which drew attention for its first season starring Evan Peters as notorious serial killer “Jeffrey Dahmer, is already planning a third season focusing on Charlie Hunnam as 1950s skin-wearing serial killer Ed Gein.

Murphy adds he’s considering a more contemporary story for the fourth season, saying: “It’s dangerous, yet exhilarating, to tackle things that are current.”
