Cyclone Dana: IMD issues warning for coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for the formation of Cyclone Dana, which will likely impact the coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal by October 23. This is because an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Sea has been forecasted to develop into a low-pressure area within 24 hours.

As per the IMD’s special bulletin, this will intensify into a depression by October 22 and is expected to develop into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by October 23.

Impact of Cyclone DanaThis development was first noted by the IMD on October 20, with the cyclonic circulation lying over the north Andaman Sea and nearby regions. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas by October 21. Squally weather with wind speeds of 35-45 km/h, gusting to 55 km/h, is expected over the Andaman Sea until October 21. Wind warnings have been issued for Odisha, West Bengal, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and the east-central Bay of Bengal.

These worsening weather conditions pose significant risks to coastal communities and marine activities.

Safety precautionsThe IMD has also issued warnings for fishermen and coastal dwellers, and urged them to take appropriate precautions, as the cyclone is expected to intensify further. While residents of impacted areas, in particular those around the shorelines of Odisha and West Bengal as well as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, are urged to be vigilant about climatic conditions, they have also been advised to take precautions, whereas fishermen have been told to return to shore by way of October 21.
