I generally wait for reviews before buying a game, unless it’s part of a series that I really enjoy like Fire Emblem or Pokemon.
The bigger the backlog, the more inclined I am to wait for a review. And/or a sale.
That said, often physical games are at their cheapest before launch, and sometimes there’s a risk of low print runs (looking at you, Atlus and NIS). And sometimes there are neat preorder bonuses (I have some nice Zelda and MonHun keyrings for my house and car keys…)
Long story short, I mostly wait for reviews but I still preorder plenty
As a general rule, I prefer to wait for reviews when the game is not from an established franchise or the preview materials that I have seen are insufficient to convince me that this is a game I am going to love.
There are, however, certain developers that I am willing to invest in day one. Unicorn Overlord is a perfect example given Vanillaware’s exceptional track record and the fact that every preview I have seen for the game convinces me that it is going to be incredible. No reviews required in those cases.
Other established series that I am deeply invested in such as Mana, Fire Emblem, Bravely and Octopath are all titles that I would preorder without seeing a review.
