Rounding up all the Bloodborne return rumours

A couple of weeks ago, fans started to get excited about Bloodborne again after a period of server maintenance for the PS4 game aligned with a date mentioned in a recent Sony advert for PlayStation.

With fan speculation that there would be a PlayStation event (and that it would also feature GTA 6), many were left disappointed when Sony instead dropped the video below.

Still, the fact Sony decided to end the trailer on Bloodborne footage, along with the words “it’s about persistence” has some believing Sony is preparing to announce something for the title.

Naturally, the game’s subreddit is taking this as a sort of cruel joke, with a whole host of memes appearing, but with Sony reportedly owning the IP, there’s every chance it really is gearing up for something.

There have been unsubstantiated reports that From Software, the game’s developer, is collaborating with Sony again, but given From Software has been working on Elden Ring, its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, and Armored Core 6 in recent years, there’s every chance Sony could move ahead without the studio.

What is Bloodborne, and why do people want it so badly?

It’s a fair question, given the game turns 10 years old next year. Many of you won’t have played Bloodborne, or perhaps don’t know why it’s so revered.

From Software has been around for years, but the Souls subgenre began with Demon’s Souls in 2009 on PS3. The game was published by Sony in Japan, but Sony was hesitant to support it outside of its home country after negative reception.

Demon’s Souls led to Dark Souls, which was a breakout success, and while some of the From Software team worked on Dark Souls II, Sony signed an agreement for a PlayStation 4 exclusive from the studio which was initially codenamed Project Beast.

Bloodborne launched in 2015 on PS4 and was critically acclaimed, earning multiple Game of the Year awards and nominations, exceeding Sony’s sales expectations.

It’s been deemed as one of the greatest games of all time, with the caveat that it struggles to hit a consistent frame rate on PS4 hardware. Not only did it never get a PlayStation 4 Pro patch, but it didn’t receive any improvements when played on PS5 either.

A combination of players wanting a native PS5 version, a PC port, or a full sequel has led to continued interest in the game, but as yet no update has been given – hence why Sony’s video including the word “persistence” feels particularly apt.
