Be ready to find a co-op partner(Image: Wargaming)In a world where battle royale titles are a dime a dozen, and extraction shooters are growing more common, it’s getting tougher to do something that stands out.
Wargaming, perhaps best known for the World of Tanks series (which currently stars Jason Statham), is looking to do just that with Steel Hunters, a new free-to-play title that packs colossal mechs into a battle royale/extraction shooter hybrid.
Revealed at this year’s Game Awards, here’s all we know about the game so far.

Steel Hunters looks explosive in Game Awards debutSteel Hunters will feature numerous mech types(Image: Wargaming)Steel Hunters is a hero shooter, with its ‘characters’ replaced by various mech types that range from bipedal war machines to spider-like alternatives.
Players fight over a resource called Starfall in a post-apocalyptic world, tackling AI enemies and human players in each match.
Each Hunter has its own abilities and strengths, and players team up in pairs to help counteract their partner’s weaknesses.
Steel Hunters takes place on huge battlefields(Image: Wargaming)Hunters can be customised, too, and players will level up within matches, acquiring fresh resources to be used while improving their abilities for the next battle before attempting to extract with what they’ve earned.
“This is a massive moment for Wargaming,” said Victor Kislyi, Wargaming CEO.
“We are best known for creating immersive and sustainable digital hobbies for millions of gamers around the world. With Steel Hunters, we’re pushing past our boundaries and bringing something completely new. Our ambition is to create one of the most exhilarating and compelling mech experiences ever.”
“Steel Hunters is the result of incredible teamwork and dedication of our talented people in Guilford, Prague and our studios around the world,” said Mike McDonald, Product Director.
“Over the past 3 years, we’ve worked relentlessly to create a game that offers a unique take on the mech shooter space by combining elements of different genres into one compelling mix. Today we’re finally ready to show players what we’ve been building.”
