Showtime
Back in early 2023 came the news that Showtime was developing multiple spin-offs of “Dexter” with plans covering three series. Those three?
The first was a young Dexter prequel titled “Dexter: Origins” which became the recently premiered “Dexter: Original Sin”. The second was a follow-up to sequel series “Dexter: New Blood” which is being titled “Dexter: Resurrection” and as of July saw Michael C. Hall signed on to return to the role.
The third was a potential spin-off on the back story of John Lithgow’s memorable fourth season antagonist the Trinity Killer. Lithgow returned to the role in “New Blood” for a short cameo.
Now, original “Dexter” showrunner Clyde Phillips and fellow series veteran Scott Reynolds have offered an update on how it’s progressing. The pair tell Deadline the series remains in development at Paramount+ with Showtime, but has come some way:
“We wrote the entire Trinity Killer series. At the moment, it is on the back burner. John Lithgow has agreed to be the voice of his younger self the way Michael Hall is doing for [Original Sin]. There’s that and we’re doing another show with Michael C. Hall, [Resurrection]… We were writing that while shooting Original Sin, so that’s fairly busy. We begin shooting [Resurrection] in January and it will air in June 2025.”
The trade says the network is likely waiting to see how ‘Original Sin’ fares to gauge if there’s interest in a further “Dexter” universe expansion before committing to ‘Trinity’.
“Dexter” revealed Arthur’s backstory which saw him blamed for his sister’s partly accidental death, leading to his mother committing suicide and his alcoholic father beating him.
By the time of the series he was now a married man with a grown child. He kills three people in the same city roughly once each year and in a specific sequence – one young woman killed in a bathtub, a mother killed by falling, and a father bludgeoned to death. Dexter kills him but not before Arthur has slain Dexter’s partner Rita (Julie Benz).
The “Dexter: Original Sin” premiere reportedly pulled in 2.1 million global viewers across Paramount+ and Showtime in the first three days of availability – Showtime’s most-streamed premiere ever. The series continues through to February.
