The local meteorological authority reported snowfall in higher-altitude regions like Kharapathar and Chanshal as well as nearby tourist attractions like Kufri and Narkanda. Because snowfall, sometimes known as “white manure,” is predicted to increase apple yields—a major contributor to the state’s INR 5,000 crore apple industry—farmers in the higher Shimla region are especially hopeful.

Snowfall ahead of Christmas has fueled a surge in tourist interest, with hotel occupancy rates projected to rise significantly. Local hoteliers, including Sushant Nag and Rahul Chawla, anticipate a 50% increase in arrivals. Heavy bookings for Christmas and substantial advance reservations for New Year celebrations further underline the tourism boom.
Although tourism has benefited from the snowfall, lower hill areas like Una, Hamirpur, Chamba, and Mandi continue to experience cold wave conditions, with Sundernagar being particularly cold. Sumdo, Kalpa, and Tabo all saw below-freezing temperatures, with Tabo recording the lowest temperature at minus 10.6°C. Up to Thursday, the weather service has issued an orange notice for severe cold, with dense fog expected in several locations.

Meanwhile, heavy snowfall in Manali caused significant traffic disruptions, leaving approximately 1,000 vehicles stranded between Solang and the Atal Tunnel. Police undertook rescue operations, ensuring the safety of nearly 700 tourists. A viral video from the scene captured a police officer encouraging drivers and providing guidance to ease the traffic.
Tourists expressed awe and joy over the unexpected snowfall. A visitor remarked, “This is my first snowfall, and it’s a lifetime experience.” Another tourist described it as a thrilling encounter with nature’s beauty, urging others to witness the snow firsthand.
Visitors are staying longer to take advantage of the white winter, which has increased the celebratory mood in Shimla and the surrounding districts. Himachal Pradesh continues to be a mystical winter destination as snowfall enchants and challenges the area.
