Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service is now offering a new plan for about $9 per month in Australia in a move expected to encourage inactive customers and sign up new ones.
The firm has been notifying inactive users in Australia about its new “backup connectivity” plan for $15 Australian dollars capped at 5GM monthly data. Users are also encouraged to ”buy additional Roam data in your account for $3 per GB,” if their primary internet fails or in case they get into an emergency.
Starlink adds that users can use the ”Roam data on the go, in-motion, internationally, and in coastal waters.” The firm is also referring its inactive users to enroll into the backup plan.
However, some users are not impressed saying it would end up being expensive, too limited or unreliable for someone used to the premium version, which is faster and unlimited.
“This is perfect for agriculture monitoring crop fields and using sensors and automated irrigation systems,” one user posted on Facebook. “Where there is no phone service would also be good for anyone with a farm or holiday house to keep an eye on with cameras. I guess any remote log-in connections to data terminals in remote locations would benefit from this, gates radio towers DMR and P25 radio data for mines and gov agencies will save a lot of time and money.”
If these package is expanded to more countries, Starlink will become one of the cheapest internet service providers and might outdo and shut competition from fiber optic companies which invest so much in infrastructure and staff. The firm recently launched a $50-per-month plan for US users with a standard Starlink dish. Starlink caps its data at 50GB and is a backup connectivity plan for $120 Starlink residential tier users.
These new plans are expected to attract more users to Starlink globally and are also acting as user surveys for Starlink to come up with great packages for its global customers. Globally, Starlink has over 4.6 million active customers and the discounts will help it to rake in as may customers as possible.
