During his vetting by the Appointments Committee on January 30, 2025, Samuel Nartey George, the Minister of Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovation-designate, vowed to resume his advocacy against homosexuality by pursuing the controversial Anti-Gay Bill in the 9th Parliament. He emphasized that the bill is essential for safeguarding Ghana’s cultural values and societal norms. “This is a matter of principle and national interest. The Anti-Gay Bill is not about discrimination but about preserving our moral and cultural values as a country,” George stated.

While Ghana upholds human rights, George argued that certain practices do not align with the nation’s traditions and beliefs. He expressed confidence that the bill would garner widespread support from both Parliament and the public, asserting, “The people of Ghana have spoken clearly on this issue, and as their representative, I will ensure that their voice is heard.”

Despite concerns from international bodies, George maintained that Ghana has the right to determine its own laws without external interference. He pledged to work closely with Parliament and relevant stakeholders to ensure the bill’s passage, reaffirming his commitment to preserving Ghanaian societal values.

The reintroduction of the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill has sparked significant debate. Supporters argue it is necessary to protect Ghana’s values, while critics contend it infringes on human rights. As the bill progresses, its impact on Ghana’s legal and social landscape remains to be seen.
