The Income Tax Department inaugurated a Taxpayers’ Center in Madurai yesterday at Tamukkam Grounds Conference Hall. The event was presided over by H.P.S. Gill, a member of the Central Board of Direct Taxes, New Delhi. Chief Commissioner Sanjay Rai and Principal Commissioner D. Vasanthan also participated.
Actor Vijay Sethupathi attended as the special guest and shared his experiences, mentioning that he worked with a chartered accountant for six months after completing his studies. He appreciated the department’s efforts to simplify tax procedures through their website and applauded their creative use of cartoons to explain tax details. He suggested adding the Tamil language option for PAN card applications, currently available only in Hindi and English. He emphasized that paying taxes is a duty akin to claiming rights.
Vijay Sethupathi raised a request for providing benefits to citizens who diligently pay taxes but face financial hardships later in life. He expressed his happiness that the event commenced with the Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu song.
The program also included panel discussions, Q&A sessions, and participation from chartered accountant associations, entrepreneurs, and trade members. Senior officials like Ritu Singh Sharma, Additional Director General from New Delhi, and Saravanan, Administrative Commissioner from Chennai, graced the occasion. Public Relations Officer S. Balasubramanian coordinated the event. The Taxpayers’ Center will remain operational today and tomorrow from 10 AM to 6:30 PM.
