Ryan Whyte Maloney, one of the most famous alums of Season 6 of “The Voice” in 2014, was pronounced dead in Las Vegas on January 28 after fatally shooting himself.
According to a police report, the fiancée, who was not named, told authorities that she and Ryan Whyte Maloney were driving home before the incident happened. Before that, they were drinking at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino, and during the ride, the fiancée repeatedly asked about her jacket, which perturbed the singer. Maloney then pulled out a pistol from the car’s glove compartment, stepped out of the car, and walked away.
The dead singer’s fiancée then allegedly heard a gunshot and rolled down her window to call for him. She did not hear him answer and got out of the car to run after him. However, she then heard a second gunshot and saw his body collapse to the ground with a bullet wound in the head. The fiancée then called 911, but the singer was pronounced dead at 2:50 a.m. on Tuesday according to a spokesperson for the Clark County Office of the Coroner. The act was allegedly captured by video surveillance equipment from two casinos – the MGM and New York-New York, from where he posted a video to his Instagram the night before his death.
Maloney’s website describes his musical style as a mix of alt-country, classic rock, R&B, and hip-hop. He started playing instruments at the age of nine and released his first album, “Tomorrow’s Another Day,” in 2005, followed by a 12-track album, “Where I’ve Been.” Before earning recognition on The Voice, he performed in intimate venues, honky-tonk bars, and at national festivals, reaching audiences of over 250,000 while promoting his music.
Maloney has had a history of suicidal thoughts and self-harm, according to the police. They said that the singer had slash marks on his arms from harming himself. Maloney had opened up before about his mental health on an Instagram post from January 16.
In it, he talked about how he was struggling financially during the filming of The Voice season. “To the audience, I was just another act in the show, yet to me, that moment was a battle for my future, a testament to my dedication to my craft. Persistence is key – never falter, never surrender.”- he wrote.
Following the conclusion of The Voice’s Season 6, Maloney stayed active in the music industry. He worked as a songwriter, producer, and studio musician, and also released several singles such as Don’t Put Me in a Box and Love with Nowhere to Go. During his career, Maloney performed alongside artists like Rascal Flatts, Shakira, Ed Sheeran, and more.
He lived at Shelton’s Ole Red in Las Vegas and left behind his parents Norman and Robin Maloney, brothers Jeremy and Josh Maloney, and his four children – Prince, Presley, Cash, and Jovi.
