Franceâs love affair with jewelry is the stuff of legends. From the shop windows on Place VendĂŽme and the Champs-ĂlysĂ©es to the histories of Marie Antionette and Empress Josephine, jewelry is part of the national character. Where better to celebrate the launch of Bag Bijouxâ the new line by Ashna and Aria Mehtaâ than in Paris during Haute Couture Week?
A drizzle fell over the gray city, but inside Lapérouse, the iconic eatery in the 6th Arrondissement, the atmosphere was vibrant. In glass cases spread throughout the ground floor bar, the jewels sparkled on Hermes bags and in velvet trays.
Born to a family of Indian jewelers, the Mehta sisters continue the tradition with a sense of whimsy and energy. Bag Bijoux, which first went viral at the Ambani wedding last year, is designed with the strap of a âKellyâ and âBirkinâ in mind. The pieces range from simple metal initials casual enough to pair with denim to elaborate sculptural creations worthy of the grandest gala.
Ashna explains, âPart of [the collectionâs] success is due to its multifunctional use, transitioning seamlessly from bag charms to pendants.â
The Vogue100 community, of which Ashna is a member, fĂȘted the launch in style. Amanda Polk and Jennifer âJJâ Lee stood out in shades of scarlet, while Lilia Zeldis and Ann Kaplan wore dark tones. Lethal cocktails circulated the buzzy room as the DJ spun tracks. As the Champagne flowed, guests tried on the charms and admired the ways the precious gems glittered in the candlelight. Front-row gossip was spilled, and show schedules were swapped. It seems diamonds (and rubies and emeralds and sapphires) truly are a girl’s best friend.
