Adobe has launched its Firefly AI video generation tool allowing anyone to subscribe and start creating content with a few simple prompts.

Adobe’s tool is fairly robust and, depending on what you’re looking for, could be an interesting alternative to stock video. For instance, if you need custom fire or smoke effects, you can now generate them on a green screen and then easily mask them into your videos.

The program even lets you choose specifics like your shot size, camera angle and the camera motion. For example, this demo I generated was a ‘Close up’ shot size, with a ‘Top-down’ camera angle and I chose ‘Zoom in’ for my motion. You also need to input a prompt or upload an image to base the generation on. I said, “A smartphone exploding,” and this is what it made.

This all seems cool, but in reality, I would expect anyone using this to need to generate a ton of videos each time they want to fit a shot into a project, which takes a lot of time and money. I was only able to generate two videos in the trial before it started asking me to pay, and each one took over a minute to generate and only lasted for five seconds.

The current prices are actually deals that will be in place until March 15. After that, it will get even more expensive. The entry-level option is $12.99 per month, but only lets you create 20 videos per month and 2,000 generation credits. Each second of video currently costs 20 credits, but that’s also poised to go up after the introductory sale. If you pay $38.99 per month, you can make 70 videos and get 7,000 credits, which gives you a more usable amount of room for the trial-and-error workflow needed with AI video generation.

You can try out the service for yourself on the Adobe Firefly website, and you can learn more about the AI tool by reading Adobe’s press release, which is linked here.
