Following its successful run in cinemas last summer, including positive reviews and a $351 million worldwide haul from an $80 million budget, 20th Century Studios greenlit a sequel to Fede Alvarez’s “Alien: Romulus”.
The film, set between “Alien” and “Aliens,” used a lot of iconography from all over the franchise including the four solo movies, “Prometheus” and the video game “Alien: Isolation” amongst other things.
In a new interview with Empire, Alvarez says they’re developing the follow-up now and this time the aim is to go somewhere new and not where you might expect to go:
“Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I are working on that right now. We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters.”
The next film will keep following Cailee Spaeny’s Rain and David Jonsson’s Andy characters, and he promises they won’t go forward with it until they have an idea worthy of a new entry:
“I think it’ll be so exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise that we’ve never been before, and to discover things that you’ve never seen before. The mistake usually with sequels is to make them because you can, and because of the success of Romulus, we definitely can make a sequel. But I wouldn’t do it unless we have a really good idea for it, something that’s worthy of the title.”
“Alien: Romulus” is out now on 4K, Blu-ray, DVD and digital as well as streaming on Hulu.
