Apple has reportedly been working on a fourth-generation iPhone SE, which is expected to launch in 2025. However, a new rumour suggests the revamped budget iPhone could sport a new name.
The Cupertino, California-based company reportedly plans to drop the ‘S’ part of the name and add a number, calling it the iPhone 16E. The details come from leaker Majin Bu on the website, better known as Twitter. Along with the name change, the leaker shared renders of an alleged iPhone 16E case and claimed the phone would feature a design similar to the iPhone 14, including an OLED display and an Action button.
While the leaker reportedly doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to Apple leaks, the details about the iPhone 14-esque design and OLED display line up with reports from other, more reputable sources — like Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Coupled with Gurman’s reporting that Apple planned to “shake-up” the iPhone line, a name change wouldn’t be out of the question. Whether Apple will go with the reported iPhone 16E moniker or something else remains to be seen.
That style of name would also follow the trend of what other smartphone manufacturers do with their budget phone lines. For example, Google usually follows up its flagship Pixels with a cheaper A-series phone — we’re expecting a Pixel 9a in the spring following the Pixel 9, 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL launched last year.
