More Mayhem Awaits In Borderlands 4
Borderlands 4 is officially coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 3, 2025. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed the date earlier today and shared new insights into the upcoming port in an interview with GamesRadar+.
According to Pitchford, the Switch 2 version of the game will run at “mostly around 30fps,” with some drops expected during intense combat scenes or when hosting multiplayer sessions in handheld mode. While earlier builds aimed for 60fps across platforms, the development team ultimately prioritized full feature support, particularly cross-play, over hitting a higher frame rate on the Switch 2.
“It was important to us to not cut anything and to support cross-play with other platforms,” Pitchford said, explaining the reasoning behind the performance trade-off.
In terms of physical editions, players picking up Borderlands 4 on cartridge will still need to download additional data, confirming that even physical releases will require online downloads, suggesting a Game Key Card model similar to other large third-party titles on Nintendo systems.
Pitchford also addressed current performance concerns surrounding Borderlands 3 on Switch 2. He acknowledged the issues and clarified that the game was not originally designed for Nintendo’s newer hardware. Gearbox may look into potential updates, but any improvements will require time and collaboration. For now, the team’s focus remains on optimizing Borderlands 4 for its October debut.
With cross-play support intact and development focused on maintaining core features, Borderlands 4 is shaping up to be a complete experience on Nintendo’s next-generation handheld.
