BREAKING: Nigerian Police Direct Investigations Units To Render Timely And Appropriate Returns; Threaten To Sanction Defaulters

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) office in Abuja, Nigeria, has issued a directive requiring all investigations departments, sections, and units to render accurate and timely returns based on established protocols.

This move aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency within the police force.

This is disclosed in a circular with policy directives issued at exactly 2 pm on January 5, 2025, to various police commands and units in the country, stating that compliance is with immediate effect.

It said the returns rendered on a monthly or quarterly basis, noting that “returns submitted without meeting approved standard will attract disciplinary action”.

It noted that the policy directives followed “INGENPOL conference with heads of Investigations/Intelligence departments/sections/units held at Abuja on 11/11/2024”.

The policy directives were issued to “enhance professionalism in investigations, intelligence gathering, maintain accountability with the objective of attaining proficiency, international best practices, provision of qualitative services in investigations and detection of crimes”.

The circular says “investigations department/sections/units are to render appropriate returns based on approved proforma as developed by Anti-Money Laundering/Counter Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) Section of FCID Abuja on monthly/quarterly basis”.

The police authorities also directed that there must be strict implementation of the Child Rights Act 2003 and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

It reads, “Police personnel are to respect the rights of the child be child-friendly in exercise of law enforcement duties x personnel must be committed x stringent in upholding protocols on care of persons in custody x especially x the vulnerables such as children x all detainees including child detainees must be accorded utmost dignity x respect x humane treatment x regular training x monitoring must promptly commence to ensure that personnel adheres strictly to international best practices in care of persons in custody x the above policy directives must henceforth be made subject of regular lectures of personnel in investigations x intelligence departments/sections/units x treat as very important x please.”
