Into every generation is born a slayer. Including the streaming generation, it turns out. A Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is actually, finally happening. No, not the kind of reboot where it’s about new people, though they tried to do that. The kind of reboot that catches up with the same characters now. Yes, this project has secured those three magic words: Sarah. Michelle. Gellar. Here’s everything we know.
Who is making the Buffy reboot? On February 3, Deadline announced that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was in the works from director Chloé Zhao, written by Poker Face creators Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. It will feature Gellar reprising her role as Buffy Summers, and all four women are executive-producing, alongside OG BTVS producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton. Yes, Dolly Parton was a producer on the original, and now she’s back.
But just as important as who is on the team is who isn’t: Joss Whedon. Whedon created the character for the 1992 Buffy movie starring Kristy Swanson, then created the show and its spin-off, Angel, before going on to even greater success with films like The Avengers. However, he has since found himself in major controversy after, among other allegations, his mistreatment of the Justice League cast and stories of toxicity from the Buffy set.

What’s the Buffy reboot about?Details are sparse, but don’t expect some giant reimagining: With Sarah Michelle Gellar protective of the Summer legacy, it’s likely we will see some version of the Buff we all know and love.
And she might not be the protagonist. “Sources” told The Hollywood Reporter that Gellar will have a “recurring” role on the potential series, but that it will mainly follow a new generation of demon-hunters. Hey, we’ll take whatever Summers we can get.
What has Sarah Michelle Gellar said about it?So little and yet so much. In January 2023, she gave her blessing to a future incarnation of Buffy, but felt it would be best if she weren’t in the title role. However, in 2024, she responded to Parton teasing a reboot by saying that she’d take a call “from the queen.” And the success of And Just Like That… apparently got her thinking that reboots could be a good idea, after all.
Then, on February 2, just before the announcement of the reboot, Gellar posted a caption-less selfie wearing sushi pajamas.…
Yes, it was a Swift-level Easter egg.
Who else is coming back?No word yet.
Where and when will the new Buffy come out?TBD on timing, but Hulu will be its home.
Where is Buffy the Vampire Slayer streaming right now?If you’re suddenly itching to revisit the original, you’re in luck: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel are both streaming on Hulu right now.
