Canadian students win Apple Swift coding challenge

Canadian students win Apple Swift coding challenge

More than four students from Canada had their apps selected

Every year, Apple hosts a challenge for students to create an original app using the Swift coding language. This year, Apple selected several Canadian winners and highlighted four, each with a wildly different app. There were 350 winning submissions worldwide.

Toronto York University student Nahom Worku developed an app called AccessEd that allows users to take photos of their notes so the app can use machine learning to analyze them and turn them into flash cards. This also works without Wi-Fi, which is pretty cool. There’s also a task management system built into the app to help keep your studies organized.

University of Waterloo student May Li developed her app Otto to help people with hearing issues unpack and learn more about all the information in an audiogram.

Another student studying at Simon Frasier in B.C. made an app called FocusAR that helps people use augmented reality to clean up stressful clutter in their life.

The final student highlighted is also from B.C. and his name is Adam Brayford. His app is called Pigment and it helps users learn about and detect possible signs of melanoma.

All of these apps sound unique, but so far, they’re not actually available. Since they’re made for the challenge, they’re not actually posted to the App Store. If you want to read more about other challenge winners from around the world, Apple has a larger blog post.

If you’re a student and interested in signing up for this program, you can learn more about it on the Apple Developer website, which walks you through all you need in order to participate.
