For pre-fall, Co’s Stephanie Danan is getting free. “I think we’ve seen such a dull era—and I’m the first to participate in the quiet luxury and the clichés of all that—but I kind of wanted to go against the grain here and just have more fun with clothes.”
And fun she did have—witness the denim overalls with contrasting patchworked knees worn underneath an extravagant maxi faux-fur coat and the very 2010 flat sandal-boot hybrids. Other ways Danan threw all the rules out the window: a roomy linen dress with a handkerchief hem worn underneath an oversized fishing vest, a pair of jogger trousers worn with a slick tailored blazer, and an oversized faux fur belt tied around the waist of delicate spaghetti strap slip dress. It’s styling that laughs in the face of the practical and the functional because the building blocks themselves are tried and true classics: sleek tailoring, sensual draped jersey pieces that move with your body, leather pieces cut in sporty silhouettes. (For those looking at the lookbook and lamenting that they’d never know how to recreate the styling at home, fret not, Danan has a few styling guides in the works.)
“I never wanted to be a creative for the sake of creativity, I’ve always wanted to be creative but then to be able to translate that and communicate that in a way that people who are not ‘in’ fashion can understand it,” she said. “Because what are we doing this for if it’s not for that?”
