Always one to find an angle, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre blamed Netflix’s price increase from earlier this week on the Liberal Party, regardless of the fact that it’s impacting countries around the globe.

In a tweet that aims to spotlight the recent fights to make tech giants pay taxes in Canada, Poilievre tells his 1.3 million followers that the $2 Netflix price bump is Justin Trudeau’s fault.

Thanks to the new Liberal tax on streaming, you will pay more to enjoy your favourite movies and shows.

However, this is likely untrue since even in places where there are no streaming taxes, Netflix prices have increased. In the U.S., the standard plan has gone up $1, and the most expensive plan has gone up by $2. There are stronger theories that Netflix is raising the cost of its plans to push more users to the ad-supplemented tier since that one has the potential to make the most money.

In the actual earnings report, the company mentions Canada twice in back-to-back paragraphs. The first mention is about how Netflix has fully rolled out its ads network in the country: “We rolled out our first party ad tech platform in Canada and we’ve now fully transitioned all ad serving in Canada in-house,” reads the report.

The following paragraph says, “As we continue to invest in programming and deliver more value for our members, we will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can re-invest to further improve Netflix.”

So, as much as Poilievre wants to think that Netlifx is boosting prices based on taxes, I don’t think that’s the case. The tweet also implies that if you sign a petition to cancel the DST, Netflix might reduce its cost, and I can guarantee that will never happen.

So far, the tweet has garnered over 200,000 views on Twitter and 700 comments below it. Many of them are just people complaining about taxes, but there are others with opposing viewpoints.
