After completing The Return of the Condor Heroes in 2006, Crystal Liu Yifei (劉亦菲) shifted her focus to movies. She did not return to television dramas until 2022’s A Dream of Splendor < 梦华录>. In recent years, Crystal released back-to-back hit dramas Meet Yourself and The Tale of Rose . Her sharp eye for scripts and matured acting skills won widespread praise, making Crystal’s new dramas on many viewers’ radar.
Although she has not filmed a new drama in two years, it is rumored she will reunite with Chen Xiao (陳曉) in a new female-centered revenge drama Tearless Snow . This marks their second collaboration following A Dream of Splendor , and the pairing is highly anticipated.
Tearless Snow is adapted from a novel of the same name by Chinese author Tianxia Chenai (天下塵埃). The story follows Crystal, a female salt merchant who is the sole survivor after witnessing her family being massacred by three powerful clans after exposing corruption in the salt tax system. Living under an assumed identity for ten years as a maid, she eventually returns to her hometown as a wealthy merchant’s widow. She joins forces with Chen Xiao, an imperial inspector sent to secretly investigate the salt trade. They gather evidence, root out corruption in the salt industry, revitalize commerce, and restore their families’ honor.
It is rumored Crystal was the second choice for the lead role as the production team originally considered Zanilia Zhao Liying (趙麗穎). Rumors that Zanilia might star in Tearless Snow began circulating when her drama The Legend of Shen Li aired last year but her studio quickly denied them. Zhao Liying allegedly turned down the offer three times due to wanting to transition her career away from historical romance dramas and similar roles.
As a result, producers turned to Crystal, who is seen as a peer in terms of status and acting. It is said that Crystal is very eager to play a revenge driven character, and since Zhao Liying had rejected the role, she took the opportunity to have the script revised multiple times to transform the lead into a more career-driven female protagonist.
