“Daredevil” Star Talks “She-Hulk” Reaction

Marvel
Marvel Studios’ “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” proved one of the most contentious of all their shows, the meta comedy tone and smaller stakes causing some fans to bristle at the show’s approach to their beloved MCU.

One episode that surprisingly divided people saw Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil appearing and teaming up with Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk. Like those old 1990s TV crossovers, this saw an often dead serious character (Murdock) participating in something with a much lighter and jokier tone than his own show.

Helping that along was the switch from the darker confines of New York’s Hell’s Kitchen to the sunnier climes of Los Angeles. Once there, a hero team-up followed along with some bedroom fun that saw Matt doing the walk of shame the next day.

Though the appearance was in line with the early comic appearances of the Daredevil character, it was a departure from the Netflix show and some fans got upset about that and the implications for the character’s future in the MCU. Talking to IGN this week to promote “Daredevil: Born Again,” Charlie Cox reflected on the reaction to his appearance in that show:

“I think it’s a case of whatever was going on with Matt in that period of time. He was able to leave that in JFK when he got on the plane…what happens in L.A. stays in L.A. It’s funny how many opinions I’ve heard about this little moment in She-Hulk. There’s the Walk of Shame, which was a last-minute idea where they set up a big green screen and just had me walk across it carrying my shoes. And a lot of people don’t like it, and a lot of people love it.”

Cox says the tonal adjustment felt fine for him as playing the character like he did on the Netflix sho wouldn’t have worked:

“If you take the Matt Murdock from our show and you put him in She-Hulk as-is, he’s probably overly serious and becomes the butt of all jokes. So he’s got to adapt to the tone. And there’s precedent within the comics. There are many runs of the comics where there’s a lot of levity, there’s a lot of tongue-in-cheek, a lot of fun. It’s an opportunity. It’s a whole different [kind of] fun with that. And maybe at some point we’ll get to see the favor returned.”

At present She-Hulk isn’t set to make an appearance in “Daredevil: Born Again” to repay the favor.
