As new year is approaching, Delhi is gearing up for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Given the celebration mode, Delhi Traffic Police has shared some restrictions and arrangements to ensure smooth travel and safety. Before you go out, know about key road closures, limited parking, and heavy foot traffic expected.
Here’s what travellers need to know:
Traffic restrictions begin at 8 PM
To manage the expected crowds and ensure safety, Delhi Traffic Police will implement traffic restrictions starting at 8 PM on December 31st. These measures aim to prevent congestion and maintain smooth traffic flow during the New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Road closures near Connaught Place (CP)
No vehicles will be allowed to approach Connaught Place from key intersections, including Mandi House roundabout and Bengali Market roundabout, due to the large number of visitors expected in the area. This restriction is aimed at ensuring safety and order during the celebrations.
Designated parking areas
While vehicle access to CP will be restricted, parking will still be allowed in specific locations around the area, including near Gole Dak Khana, Mandi House, and on roads such as Kali Bari Marg and Pt. Pant Marg. However, parking spaces are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Towing of unauthorised vehicles
Vehicles parked in unauthorized areas will be towed, so it is important for drivers to adhere to the designated parking zones to avoid penalties.
Use public transport
Given the limited parking and heavy traffic, the Traffic Police strongly advise people to use public transportation to reach their destinations. This will help alleviate the congestion around CP and other popular areas.

Routes like Mathura Road and Bhairon Road, particularly near the Delhi Zoo, are expected to experience significant traffic. Travelers should avoid these areas to prevent delays.
India Gate Traffic Measures
In addition to CP, the Traffic Police will implement restrictions around India Gate to manage both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Diversions will be set up at various points, including the C-Hexagon and surrounding roundabouts, depending on pedestrian traffic.
Limited Parking Near India Gate
Similar to CP, parking near India Gate will be scarce, and public transport is encouraged for visitors planning to attend celebrations in the area.
Strict Traffic Law Enforcement
To maintain order, the police will be conducting strict checks for traffic violations, including drunken driving, overspeeding, and dangerous driving. Offenders will face legal consequences under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Stay Informed
Travellers are urged to plan their routes in advance, taking into account the traffic restrictions and public transport options. This proactive approach ensures a safer and more organized celebration for all.
