Dharamshala sees surge in foreign tourists, turning into a global hub for adventure and spirituality

Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh is witnessing a surge in foreign visitors, signaling a strong recovery in its tourism industry. Vinay Dhiman, District Tourism Officer of Dharamshala, informed that the footfall of international tourists has risen significantly in 2024, and is gradually nearing the pre-pandemic levels.

According to reports, Dharamshala’s many attractions are partly responsible for the increase in tourism. It has become a well-liked destination for tourists looking for adventure, spirituality, and scenic views.

The primary highlight of this place that lures foreign tourists is the teachings of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. This place has long been a center for Buddhist learning and spirituality, and most visitors from across the world visit this place, particularly in September, to attend the Dalai Lama’s teachings in McLeodganj. This is not the only thing that’s the appealing factor of Dharamshala, and it goes beyond spirituality, extending to yoga and wellness centers, which have also become other major attraction centers over the years.

Dharamshala is also a place where adventure enthusiasts flock to take part in thrilling outdoor activities. Many foreigners have taken up paragliding, particularly at Bir Billing, one of the best paragliding locations in the world. International pilots have already participated in the Paragliding World Cup in Bir Billing and the Pre-World Cup in Narwana in 2024. Trekking in the picturesque Himalayas is still a popular pastime since it provides an opportunity to see the untamed beauty of the area and offers stunning views.

If we go by statistics and compare the numbers, in 2021, the region saw only 2,700 foreign visitors due to the pandemic, whereas that number increased to 6,500 in 2022, and 2023, it saw a remarkable surge of 16,222 tourists. Interestingly, 2024 has also seen a steady growth in tourist numbers, as those numbers have already been surpassed in, while more visitors are expected by year-end. And if this trend follows, Dharamshala will see a 25% rise in foreign visitors over the previous year.

Tourists are drawn to Dharamshala by its natural beauty, pleasant climate, and lively local culture. Reports add that both American and Russian tourists are in awe of this place and love to explore the area’s culture, beautiful scenery, and kind people.
