Drink more, scroll less with Captain Morgan phone case

The Captain’s Case helps stop you from checking your phone by turning it into a coaster

Captain Morgan made a smartphone case to help Canadians disconnect and focus on the things that really matter, like slamming rum and cokes with the boys at the cotty.

Dubbed ‘The Captain’s Case,’ this unusual smartphone case is designed to cover the screen to help people “unplug and reconnect, IRL.”

The idea is to cut down on the temptation to check your phone by hiding the screen, though you can still feel vibrations and hear notification chimes through the case. Not to mention a lot of people have smartwatches these days, which also show notifications. So… maybe it doesn’t help that much after all.

The Captain’s Case also works as a coaster, which I guess is nice if you need another layer between you and your phone.

As far as case performance goes, I don’t think The Captain’s Case will do much for you if you drop your phone. It’s designed as a one-size-fits-all option, so if you have a phone on the smaller end, there’s lots of room for it to slide around inside the case. Plus, the only padding is a thin layer of fabric.

The rest of the case is just plastic, with some decently strong magnets to hold it closed.

While The Captain’s Case is a pretty silly idea overall, the thought behind it isn’t. Phones can absolutely be distracting, whether you’re out partying or hanging with friends at home (or the cotty).

There are other ways to achieve a phone-less hangout, though. You could turn it into a game where everyone has to put their phones down and the first person to touch their phone loses. If you really want to spice things up, you could turn it into a bet — the first person to touch their phone pays for dinner or (if you’re into partying) takes a drink or shot.

Either way, you’ll need to get creative because it doesn’t seem like there’s a way for people to actually get this smartphone case.
