While the trade war with the U.S. hasn’t ramped up tariffs on as many products as initially expected there is still a surging sense of Canadian pride as people try to learn more about what brands and products are actually made in our country.
A new app called Shop Canadian has been released on the App Store and the Google Play Store. It lets people scan barcodes to quickly learn if a product is made in Canada or not. The app is quite simple to use and was developed by two Edmonton creators named William Boytinck and Matthew Suddsby.
Boytinck came up with the idea after struggling to determine what products were Canadian and what was American at his grocery store. On the spot, he decided to find out what information he could learn from a barcode, and from there, the app was born, according to a CTV News report.
The app uses a product standardization database with close to 10,000 companies registered in it and it’s been used already to scan 15,000 different items. The duo even updated the app on February 7 to give each product a 1-5 rating on how Canadian each item is.
On the App Store Shop, Canadian is in the number one spot in the Shopping category charts, impressively placing it above apps like Temu and Shien. On Android, it’s even hit 28 on the overall Top Free App Charts.
You can try out the app yourself on iOS or Android since it’s free to download.
