Ellie Young, Henning Medical Student Killed in Shelby Farms Shooting in Memphis

Ellie Claire Young, a medical student at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center – College of Medicine – has been killed following a shooting at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis.

Young, 22, of Henning TN, was killed in the shooting that erupted near the park’s visitor center as a breast cancer walk organized by the American Cancer Society dubbed “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” occurred nearby.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) and witnesses, the shooting happened around 12:15 p.m. when a car pulled up chasing a woman. The perpetrator shot Young twice, killing her with a headshot. Reports indicate he was her husband.

“This young lady, she was still running and a young lady behind her. A white car pulled up and shot her twice,” witness Monica Bell told FOX13.

“Everything was still going on down there normally, still carrying on, people still walking,” another witness said. “It sounded like, you know how a car backfires? That’s what it sounded like but come to find out, we got done with it, they said a man shot his wife in the head.”

Ellie Young, who hails from Henning, attended Halls High School. She studied at the University of Tennessee at Martin and in August, started a Medical degree at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center – College of Medicine.

At the start of the program, she shared photos of herself on social media.

“Added a new coat to my closet!! 👩🏼‍⚕️🩺 So very grateful for this opportunity, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds. #classof2028 #futureMD,” she said.

Tragically, her life was prematurely ended. Police captured a suspect after a high-speed pursuit through multiple counties.

“My heart breaks for the family of sweet Ellie Young,” Anna Claire Christy, a friend wrote in a moving tribute. “She was someone who I looked up to for so many reasons- her kindness, intelligence, and humbleness never went unnoticed. I am thankful for the time I had with her in Chi Omega, rest easy sweet sister,”
