How Bruce Willis’ Wife Emma Heming Willis Explains His Illness to Their Kids
Amid the joy of reaching major milestones with husband Bruce Willis, Emma Heming Willis feels bursts of grief.
While marking her 17th anniversary with the Die Hard star, the Make Time podcast host shared how his battle with frontotemporal dementia has shaped the way they celebrate their life together—and why it’s important to give herself space to process her brief moments of heartbreak.
“Anniversaries used to bring excitement — now, if I’m honest, they stir up all the feelings, leaving a heaviness in my heart and a pit in my stomach,” Emma wrote on Instagram Dec. 29 alongside a throwback photo of them in the water in Turks and Caicos. “I give myself 30 minutes to sit in the ‘why him, why us,’ to feel the anger and grief.”
“Then I shake it off and return to what is,” she continued. “And what is… is unconditional love. I feel blessed to know it, and it’s because of him. I’d do it all over again and again in a heartbeat.”
Following her candid reflection, Emma, who shares daughters, Mabel Willis, 12, and Evelyn Willis, 10, with Bruce, 69, was showered with love in the comments. Including from his and ex Demi Moore’s daughter Tallulah Willis, 30, who wrote, “I love you so much. Both of you 321.”
In the two years Bruce was diagnosed with FTD, Emma, Demi and the Sixth Sense actor’s five kids—which also includes his and The Substance star’s older daughters Rumer Willis, 36, and Scout Willis, 33—have proven to be not just a crucial support system for him but for each other.
“The family respects the way I’m looking after him; they really support me,” Emma, who wed Bruce in 2009, told Town & Country earlier this fall. “If I need to vent, if I need to cry, if I need to rage—because all of that can happen and it’s okay to have those feelings—they are always there to listen.”
The 46-year-old, who has spent the last few years advocating for not just her husband but others with FTD, added, “I’m so thankful that we are this blended family. They’re very supportive, very loving, and very helpful, and a lot of people don’t have that.”

Bruce’s 69th Birthday
“Oh Daddio, to be loved by you is such a gift,” Rumer Willis wrote in an Instagram tribute to her father in March 2024. “You are the funniest, most tender, charming, out of this world silly talented and magical papa. Looking through these photos this morning I am just filled with the deepest gratitude that we chose to spend this life together. I am your first baby and man sometimes I wish I could be tiny enough to just cozy up on your chest again and laugh and cuddle you.”
She continued, “I love you so deep in my bones I don’t know how my muscles hold them. You are the greatest papa I could ever hope for. Thank you for your generosity, your silliness and heart. Lou loves you so big. Happy Birthday Daddio.”
