Former DeepMind and ByteDance AI leader Pan Xin has joined Meituan to spearhead multimodal AI innovation as the company accelerates its full-stack AI strategy in 2025.
Pan Xin, former Google DeepMind researcher and ex-head of multimodal AI platforms at ByteDance, has recently joined Meituan, according to multiple sources.
Pan previously worked at Google on TensorFlow’s dynamic graph mode and later held key AI roles at Baidu, Tencent, and ByteDance, focusing on deep-learning frameworks and visual/multimodal model platforms. In November 2024, he became an AI partner at FlashX, leading R&D for its smart-glasses initiative.
At Meituan, Pan now leads multimodal AI innovation and has overseen development of applications including the LongCat App. His arrival comes as Meituan pushes forward on its dual priorities for 2025: the intensifying food-delivery competition and a company-wide AI transformation.
CEO Wang Xing previously outlined Meituan’s three-layer AI strategy—AI at work, AI in products, and building proprietary LLMs—supported by continued investment in pretraining and infrastructure.
Despite market pressure, Meituan has maintained aggressive AI hiring, focusing on high-level candidates from teams such as Alibaba Qwen, Seed, and Tencent Hunyuan.
Throughout 2025, Meituan released a full stack of foundation models—covering language, vision, audio, and video—and accelerated AI deployment across core operations, from merchant tools to financial services. The company is now shifting from standalone consumer AI apps toward AI-driven transformation of its primary businesses.
