Freedom Mobile announced it expanded its rate plan options in Manitoba with more data and new Roam Beyond features.

The move comes less than a year after Quebecor expanded the Freedom wireless brand into the province. In a press release, Quebecor president and CEO Pierre Karl Péladeau said the improvements were possible thanks to the CRTC’s mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) framework.

MVNOs allow wireless providers to offer service beyond their network footprint by running on top of competitors’ networks. Interestingly, Freedom previously took issue with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s MVNO framework, saying the MVNO rates it set are among the highest in the world. Last year, Freedom said it would limit the amount of data on its plans in Manitoba because of the MVNO rates.

Freedom Mobile has the following plans available in Manitoba, starting with the new options:

New: $39/60GB LTE Canada/U.S./Mexico + 5GB one-time Roam Beyond data.
New: $49/60GB LTE Canada/U.S./Mexico + 15GB Roam Beyond data.
New: $59/60GB LTE Canada/U.S./Mexico + 25GB Roam Beyond data.
$25/3GB LTE Canada/U.S./Mexico
$20/10GB LTE Canada/U.S./Mexico + 1GB one-time Roam Beyond data (introductory price, includes $14/mo credit for six months).
$10/100MB LTE Canada/U.S./Mexico with two hours of talk and unlimited text.

The new plans are similar to the newly launched plans Freedom offers in other provinces, with some important differences. For one, Freedom’s Manitoba plans only have 4G LTE data, whereas Freedom offers 5G and 5G+ data in other provinces.

Also of note, Freedom doesn’t offer more than 60GB of data on its Manitoba plans. Take the $49 plan — in other provinces, it includes 80GB of data but is otherwise the same plan.

This is to say that the Manitoba plans don’t offer as good value as some of Freedom’s other plans, which is likely a symptom of the MVNO rates.
