Frozen Waffles and Pancake Products Pulled From Shelves at Walmart, Target and More Over Listeria Risk

A new recall could affect your household if like buttermilk waffles in the morning or have been trying to boost your protein intake, as some of the most popular frozen waffle and pancakes have been recalled due to a listeria risk.

TreeHouse Foods has announced that it is recalling hundreds of waffle products because there is a possibility they have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. 

The recalled products were available for purchase throughout the US and Canada, sold under various store-brand or generic names, including Walmart’s Great Value, Schnucks, Target’s Good & Gather, Price Chopper, Kodiak, Best Choice and more. 

Some of the recalled products include: 

Always Save 11-ounce Buttermilk PancakesBest Choice 12.3-ounce Chocolate Chip WafflesBrookshire’s 16.5-ounce and 33-ounce Buttermilk PancakesGood and Gather 10.7-ounce Buttermilk Vanilla WafflesGood and Gather 12.3-ounce Blueberry WafflesGreat Value 12.3-ounce Homestyle WafflesGreat Value 560-gram Blueberry Waffles Kodiak Cakes 13.4-ounce Vanilla Buttermilk WafflesMany of the products included in the recall list have already been removed from the chain store’s websites. Customers are urged to check their freezers for any of these products and dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.

The wide-reaching recall comes less than a month after nearly 12 million pounds of meat was recalled due to a listeria risk.

What is listeria monocytogenes? Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause listeriosis, a serious foodborne illness. Pregnant women and the elderly are at an increased risk of having serious symptoms in connection with the illness. 

Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion and gastrointestinal distress. For high-risk individuals, the illness can cause death. According to the Mayo Clinic, if you have a serious infection from listeria, you may need antibiotics to help recover.
