X is going wild with rumours of Half-Life’s return(Image: Valve)”You can’t believe everything you hear on the internet” the old adage goes, and that’s perhaps even more true in the secretive world of video games.
It’s tough to tell a real leak from speculation or just plain old nonsense, and if you believe everything you read, tonight’s Game Awards will showcase something related to Bloodborne, the second trailer for GTA 6, and goodness knows what else.
We remain unconvinced, but at least one post on X (formerly Twitter) doing the rounds suggests that Half-Life 3 could make an appearance, too.

Half-Life 3 tipped for reveal at Game AwardsWe can’t say we’ve missed these guys(Image: Valve)We love a good rumour as much as the next crowbar-wielding protagonist, but Half-Life 3 is somewhat of a unicorn.
Still, Nima Zeighami, VP of product for Infinite Reality, has taken journalist Jason Schreier’s suggestion that “There are at least 2 things [at The Game Awards] that will make you guys reacting be like ‘Holy sh*t!, I can’t believe this thing is here!'” as tying in with a rumour about Gordon Freeman’s long-awaited return.
Content cannot be displayed without consent”The rumor I heard, and I am not kidding here, is that Gabe will be there to announce Half-Life 3,” he posted, referring to Valve’s Gabe Newell.
“I personally don’t believe it. But that could be what Jason’s talking about!”
This could all be nothing, of course, but it’s worth noting The Game Awards creator and host Geoff Keighley does have a strong relationship with Valve from his time in games journalism, with the company offering its Steam Deck as part of a giveaway last year.
Could Gordon Freeman return today?(Image: Valve)It’s a big jump from handing out hardware to revealing a game 20 years in the making, though.
One of gaming’s “white whales”, the last game in the series was 2020’s Half-Life Alyx, a prequel that was only playable in VR.
