‘I Was Very Naive At The Beginning Of My Career’ – Nigerian Singer Tems Reveals

Nigeria

Temilade Openiyi, famously known as Tems, has shared a candid insight into her career journey and personal philosophy in a recent interview with Glamour Magazine. The Grammy-winning singer, best known for hits like “Essence,” reflected on her early days in the music industry, admitting that she was initially quite naive.

Driven solely by her passion for creating good art, Tems confessed, “I don’t want to lie. I was very naive at the beginning of my career. I just wanted to make good art.” It took time for her to learn how to navigate the complexities of the music business in a healthy and balanced way, a lesson she continues to apply today.

Tems also opened up about her reluctance to embrace mobile phones, explaining that she prefers to live in the world and enjoy real-life experiences rather than get caught up in digital distractions. “I don’t like my smartphone anyway. I prefer to live in the world and have experiences,” she said. “If I have even the smallest excuse to leave my phone in the drawer, I’ll take it every time.” She believes that staying present is key to personal growth, emphasizing, “The only way to develop is to continuously discover new perspectives and reevaluate your life. There is nothing in my life that I would change.”

While she has grown in both her career and outlook, Tems credits her family and management for helping her stay grounded through it all. “It is both my management and my family that keeps me grounded. Especially my family, my mother, and my brother,” she shared.

Her journey from a passionate but naive artist to a seasoned and grounded professional serves as an inspiring reminder to stay true to one’s art while embracing new lessons and maintaining balance in life.
