The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised concerns about a cyclonic circulation developing over the Andaman Sea, which is expected to evolve into a low-pressure area around October 21, 2024. This system could potentially intensify into a depression by October 23, with a predicted movement northwestwards. As a result, coastal regions of north Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh are on high alert for possible impacts.
IMD’s monitoring highlights the urgency in tracking this weather system, especially given October’s history of cyclonic activities. IMD Director General Mrutyunjaya Mohapatra has emphasized the uncertainties surrounding the system’s development. “The IMD has made no prediction on whether the system will develop into a cyclonic storm.
October is known as the month of cyclones, and some weather models are indicating the probability of cyclogenesis. We provide a forecast on the path and intensification of a system after assessing over 10 weather models, but right now there is no consensus as a low-pressure area is yet to be formed,” Mohapatra stated. This underscores the complexities of forecasting cyclonic events, especially in regions prone to such occurrences.

In light of the potential adverse weather, the IMD has advised fishermen to suspend their activities and seek safety by October 21, anticipating squally conditions over the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. Wind speeds in the area could range from 35-45 kmph, with gusts up to 55 kmph between October 21 and 22. The system poses risks to coastal communities and maritime personnel, warranting caution and early preparedness.

Heavy rainfall is forecasted for Odisha’s coastal regions between October 23-25, suggesting an increase in weather activity. Light to moderate rains or thundershowers are expected in parts of south and north coastal Odisha, while the northern interior region may remain dry. These predictions are crucial for local authorities and residents to implement necessary measures to minimize the impact of the upcoming weather disturbances.

The IMD has also issued multiple alerts. An orange alert for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands predicts heavy rainfall on October 20, with a continuation of the alert from October 21 to 25 as the low-pressure area develops. Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, and the Konkan region, advising residents of potential rainfall.
