Jim Carrey On “Grinch” Return & Unretiring

Universal Pictures
Though he’s mostly retired from films, Jim Carrey is about to return to screens with a dual villain role in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”.

Speaking with ComicBook.com to promote the project, he was asked if there was one character from his career that he’d love the opportunity to play again. His answer? The Grinch.

Carrey played the title character in Ron Howard’s 2000 Christmas film “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. The film ended up making $346 million worldwide off mixed reviews and was the highest-grossing film of 2000 domestically.

Carrey famously had to endure the make-up for the Grinch 100 times – a process that initially took 8.5 hours each time and which Carrey said was akin to being “buried alive”. Producer Brian Grazer ended up hiring a man who teaches CIA operatives how to endure torture to help get Carrey through the movie.

Carrey understandably says he wouldn’t mind doing it again if said make-up could be done digitally:

“Oh, gosh, you know, if we could figure out the Grinch. The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”

Carrey was also asked about those retirement plans and it seems they’re not as set in stone as expected:

“You can’t be definite about these things. I said I’d like to retire but I think I was talking more about power resting. Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people you really enjoy working with, things tend to change.”

The comments come as early reactions to “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” went online yesterday and praised the film as the best entry so far. The film opens in cinemas on December 20th and Paramount has today released some themed Christmas-film poster homages and a Rankin-Bass style short film to promote the film. Check those out below:
