Jocelyne Wildenstein, the Swiss socialite known for her dramatic, feline-like appearance due to extensive plastic surgery, has passed away at the age of 84. Wildenstein, often referred to as “Catwoman” in the tabloids, died peacefully in her sleep on December 31, 2024, in her suite in Paris. Her partner, fashion designer Lloyd Klein, confirmed her death.
“It is with heavy heart and with great sadness that Mr. Lloyd Klein announces the unexpected death of his beloved fiancée and longtime companion, Jocelyne Wildenstein,” Klein said in an English-language statement sent to the Agence France-Presse news agency.
Born Jocelyne Périsset in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1940, she gained international fame after marrying billionaire art dealer Alec Wildenstein in 1978. The couple had two children, Diane and Alec Jr., but their marriage ended in a highly publicized divorce in 1999. The settlement, amounting to $2.5 billion, was one of the largest of its time.
Wildenstein’s striking appearance, often associated with feline features, was the result of numerous cosmetic procedures. While many speculated that these surgeries were to please her ex-husband, Alec, who she claimed “hates to be with old people,” she denied this. She explained that her look was a reflection of her heritage and personal style. In a 1998 interview with Vanity Fair, she attributed her cat-like eyes and high cheekbones to her grandmother’s features, saying, “The lynx has perfect eyes.” Despite the controversy surrounding her appearance, she always maintained a strong sense of identity.
In her later years, Wildenstein faced significant financial struggles, declaring bankruptcy in 2018. Nevertheless, she remained resilient, retaining her sense of humor and love for life. Wildenstein began her relationship with Klein in 2003, and the two became engaged in 2017.
Jocelyne Wildenstein’s life was a mixture of wealth, controversy, and strength. She will be remembered not only for her striking appearance but also for her enduring spirit in the face of adversity.
