Bollywood actress and Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut’s film “Emergency,” which she directed, produced, and acted in, had a low box office collection on its opening day but saw slight improvement on the second day. The movie, based on the 21-month Emergency period in India from 1975-1977 during Indira Gandhi’s tenure as Prime Minister, reflects a controversial time in Indian history.
Released on January 17 after facing significant challenges such as opposition from Sikh groups and censorship hurdles, the film reportedly had a production budget of ₹60 crores. On its first day, “Emergency” earned ₹2.5 crores in India, and collections improved on day two to about ₹4 crores, reaching a total of ₹6 crores in two days. Despite mixed reviews, industry analysts suggest that the gradual increase in collections could lead to further growth in the coming days. The film’s team hopes it will revive Kangana Ranaut’s box office success streak.
Commenting on her experience, Kangana shared that her extensive research on Indira Gandhi revealed surprising contradictions. She found that Gandhi, considered a powerful leader, relied heavily on others, including her son Sanjay Gandhi. Kangana admitted to not having much sympathy for Indira Gandhi before working on the film but appreciated the historical significance of her leadership. Additionally, Kangana stated that “Emergency” addresses a pivotal part of history and is not meant to provoke controversy.
The film, originally slated for release in September 2022, faced delays due to certification issues. Kangana expressed dismay over attempts to block its release but remained focused on presenting a different narrative about a critical period in India’s history.
Indira Gandhi, despite controversies, remains one of India’s most celebrated leaders who led the nation as its Prime Minister thrice—a feat Kangana acknowledged as extraordinary.
