Kankaria Carnival 2024: Where tradition meets modern development in Ahmedabad

The 15th annual Kankaria Carnival in Ahmedabad kicked off with an extravagant ceremony, signaling the start of the Nagarotsav celebrations. Held at the renowned Kankaria Lake, the event was highlighted by mesmerizing light and sound shows, as well as a captivating drone display themed around a developed India.

This vibrant festival not only showcases the city’s rich heritage but also celebrates its progress. During the inauguration, the Chief Minister shared the story of Kankaria Lake’s transformation from a simple zoo, formerly known as Lake Kantha, to a thriving cultural hub. The rejuvenation of the lake, initiated in 2006 under the leadership of then-Chief Minister Narendra Modi, has turned it into a prominent venue for cultural events and community gatherings.

In addition to the carnival, the Chief Minister launched 34 major urban development projects worth ₹868 crores. These projects include the construction of 345 houses in Naroda, the creation of new gymnasiums and gardens, and the development of a sewage treatment plant (STP). These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to improving public facilities and infrastructure, aligning with the overall vision of urban growth and citizen welfare.

The Chief Minister noted that the Kankaria Carnival, a 15-year tradition, beautifully merges cultural celebrations with the unveiling of modern development, symbolizing the balance between Ahmedabad’s rich past and its bright future.

The week-long festival, scheduled from March 25 to March 31, 2024, is a ₹6-crore extravaganza organized by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. It promises to offer something for everyone, with morning sessions dedicated to yoga, pranayama, and meditation, followed by aerobics and Zumba in the afternoons. Evening performances will feature a mix of traditional dances like Garba and Raas, as well as contemporary music shows by popular artists such as Dave and the Rabari Band.

The festival also includes stand-up comedy, storytelling, and diro performances. Various competitions in singing, dancing, music, and comedy will provide local talent with the opportunity to shine. Families can enjoy interactive experiences like life-size board games, puppet shows, workshops, and a selfie court.

Ensuring visitor safety is a priority, with first-aid stations, childcare facilities, and surveillance in place. Food lovers can indulge in both local and international cuisine at a dedicated food zone. The Sabarmati Riverfront adds to the festive mood, offering rides like a Ferris wheel, a train, and an inflatable park.

With its diverse activities, world-class setup, and emphasis on community spirit, the Kankaria Carnival is more than just a festival—it’s a celebration of Ahmedabad’s culture, progress, and enduring spirit, creating lasting memories for all.
