Bachelorette’s Katie Thurston Confirms Cancer Spread to Liver, Stage 4 Diagnosis

Katie Thurston’s cancer is progressing.

The Bachelorette alum shared that her breast cancer has now spread to her liver.

“Unfortunately, in my case, [a PET scan] did detect some spots on my liver that were a little suspicious,” she said in a March 28 Instagram video. “Because of this, I did have to then do a liver biopsy to see if my cancer has spread. After days of waiting, unfortunately, I did find out today that my breast cancer has spread to the liver.”

“It is fairly small,” she noted. “However, that does put me at stage 4.”

Thurston explained that her new treatment plan—which will include chemotherapy—begins on April 4.

“I know stage 4 can sound very scary, and it can be,” the 34-year-old continued. “However, given that I am triple-positive and the spots on my liver are fairly small and detected early, I feel very optimistic on my outcome.”

Thurston was diagnosed 43 days ago with triple-positive breast cancer—which is fueled by the hormones estrogen and progesterone, as well as the HER2 protein, according to Breastcancer.org. Now at stage 4, the disease is considered “serious” and requiring “immediate expert care,” per the City of Hope cancer center.

Thurston first shared her cancer diagnosis publicly the day after Valentine’s Day, which marked a bittersweet occasion for her and then-fiancé Jeff Arcuri.

“Yesterday I saw all the couples post their Valentines Day celebrations,” the reality star wrote on Instagram Feb. 15. “I felt envious if I’m being honest. Jeff took me to Hawaii and after, we were going to travel the world before planting roots together in NYC finally. But instead, my Vday was spent coordinating a place to live as I have to go back to LA for more testing and treatment.”

“I used my morning to figure out insurance for NYC and laws on preexisting conditions,” she shared. “I scheduled appointments for another biopsy, fertility, mental health, surgery, as well as meeting with my team to discuss the overall treatment plan, which will include chemo.”

However, Thurston’s treatment was paused this week after doctors discovered the spots on her liver.

But throughout her cancer battle, Thurston has been able to turn to Arcuri, who she married at their home March 22, for support every step of the way.

“It was this kind gesture of him saying, truly, in sickness and in health,” she told Us Weekly about their wedding. “He is proving that he’s here to stay. He shows up every day and he does it in ways that just continue to surprise.”
