The Owu-Ikosi Community in the Ikosi Ejinrin Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State is next in line among vulnerable rural communities in Lagos State to benefit from the benevolence of the UK-based charity organisation, Merry-Gold Water Charity.
Sponsors of the project, Merry-Gold Water Charity UK, is a nonprofit organisation committed to providing sustainable water sources for the vulnerable residents of Odo Ayandelu Town and its neighbouring communities in the Ikosi Ejinrin LCDA of Lagos State, Nigeria.
The Owu-Ikosi project, which is the second water project undertaken by the non-governmental organisation, was sited in Owu-Ikosi Town following a royal request from the town’s monarch, Oba Nelson Ogunlari, during the commissioning of the organisation’s pioneer water project in Odo Ayandelu on 9 August 2023. The new project, which is almost ready for commissioning, commenced in December 2024 at the old market site, centrally located in the town and overlooking its major road, the 3-kilometre-long Owu-Ikosi Road, which begins at the neighbouring Agbowa-Ikosi Town centre, traverses Owu-Ikosi Town, and ends on the outskirts, linking the Ikorodu–Ijebu-Ode Expressway.
Merry-Gold Water Charity UK, founded by Prince Akeem Adenuga, aims to produce at least 3,000 litres of clean drinking water daily for the use of approximately 4,000 people in and around Owu-Ikosi. The borehole, constructed with modern technology by experts in the field, will operate both day and night.
Among other features, the project will be powered by a solar system, which will also provide floodlights at the site by night, along with a closed-circuit monitoring system to oversee activities around the project and prevent any unforeseen circumstances.
Notably, Merry-Gold Water Charity UK, registered with both the UK and Nigerian governments, commenced operations in Nigeria in 2022 with the execution and commissioning of its pioneer project in the organisation’s CEO’s native town of Odo Ayandelu in August 2022. Since then, the project has been providing potable water to about 4,000 residents of Odo Ayandelu daily, ensuring improved health conditions for the community.
Following the success of the Odo Ayandelu project, it became clear that, with the necessary support and encouragement as before, Merry-Gold would extend its tentacles in its mission to provide sustainable water sources to other areas of Lagos State, in line with the avowed commitment of Prince Akeem Adenuga and his team.
Upon completion, the Owu-Ikosi project will have the capacity to provide approximately 3,000 litres of clean drinking water to serve around 4,000 vulnerable residents of Owu-Ikosi, who have previously struggled to find reliable water sources for their daily needs.
Prince Akeem Adenuga is optimistic that, with the highly experienced and dependable team working on site, the Owu-Ikosi project will significantly improve the quality and availability of water for households in Owu-Ikosi and, by extension, the Ikosi Ejinrin LCDA. Furthermore, the initiative will be extended to other communities in Lagos State to fulfil the charity’s mission.
The Merry-Gold Water Project at Owu-Ikosi is strategically positioned at the four-way junction of Modu Street and Alh. L. K. Jimoh Street, connecting the 3-kilometre-long Owu-Ikosi Road, which starts from the neighbouring Agbowa-Ikosi centre and extends to the outskirts of Owu-Ikosi Town.
Prince Akeem Adenuga expresses his gratitude to everyone who has made this project possible, including his friends, colleagues, and benefactors in the UK for their financial support, advice, and encouragement. He extends special thanks to Finlay Jude Associates (a UK-based employment agency), Mr Leon Fein and Mr Steve Fermandel of Hydrosave UK Ltd, Claire Iredale (Thames Water Services UK), Vicky Smart (Smart Quality Solutions UK), and all the Trustees of Merry-Gold Water Charity UK, including Mr George Miller, Barrister Jide Lanlehin, Dave Evans, Mr Bryan Worika, Mr Ganiu Abdul, and of course, his loving, supportive wife, Princess Abimbola Adenuga, who has played a crucial role in making this dream a reality.
